Back to the Future, Part 6

Singapore, December 22 (FYP) - A 23-year old man hanged himself a month after he was publically "shamed" on television. Mr. Chu Wu Chia was accused of molesting a 17-year NUS student early last year. Though no clear evidence was ever presented by the prosecution, he pleaded guilty to avoid the more serious charges. But the event turned as his case was selected by the courts to be broadcasted nationwide. After the broadcast, he was hounding by the news media and even the school children. He left a note to his wife and three children saying that he will never be able to live in this unforgiving society.

A few months ago, the Chief Justice announced that television cameras would be allowed into the Subordinate Courts to televise excerpts of selected molest cases, where the accused pleads guilty. This experiment, made at the request of the police, is aimed at shaming offenders into not committing the crime again. The request was made in response to the increases in molest cases. Because of the success of the program, the police has recently requested that the crime victims be selectively shown on TV to demonstrate the traumatic effect of serious crimes on an individual's live. The courts have previously agreed to allow live execution on TV. Something that even a civilized country like the United States has not able to achieve.

SDP has submitted a formal protest to the government stating that result of this incident is "unacceptable". The opposition party stated that the result constituted a "cruel and unusual" punishment. As usual, the protest was rebuffed instantaneously, thanks to the efficient process of the legal system. Ironically, the rating of TCS went though the HDB roof when the case was shown on TV.

Singapore, June 23 (AP) - Singapore has finally filled in the last available inch of space within its territorial water, or land as there is no more sea to be reclaimed. Increased demand in property by its citizens over the last decade has force the government to speed the land reclamation process. The government finally instituted a mandatory recycling program a decade after the SDP had proposed it in the parliament. The reason then was the need for reclamation. As of today, there are 12 Beach Roads, 5 East Coast Parkways and 2 West Coast Parkways.

As the need for real estates continue to grow, Singapore has vowed to be the first nation to develop the vertical reclamation technology. If the technology proves successful, Singapore will become the first nation to be in space.
