Computer animation can revolutionize standard practices in education and training with inexpensive and accessible computer-based instruction. Unfortunately, standard techniques require tremendous amount of artistry, skill, and time: animations with realistic motions require manual selection of appropriate simulation parameters; and animations with highly stylized actions require manual articulation of geometric shapes. This talk describes our recent progress in an effort to simplify animation tasks through acquisition, analysis, and modeling of both realistic human motion and stylized shape deformations. Ultimately, we plan to incorporate these solutions into rapid-animation tools with the hope of making animation as easy as speaking into a microphone or typing into a word processor.
