SSG Seminar Abstract

Potential and Pitfalls of UWB Communications

Dr. Brian Sadler
Army Research Lab

Ultra-wideband (UWB) systems are now licensed for use in the USA under various power and bandwidth restrictions. We consider UWB coexistence with narrowband systems, and show analytically the impact of UWB on a narrowband digital receiver. Next, we consider episodic transmission in an asynchronous direct sequence-like UWB scheme. Performance is given via a Chernoff bound on bit error rate, that includes processing gain, multi-user interference, and channel effects. Finally, we show recent results on low complexity digital UWB receivers, focusing on one-bit ADC implementations.
