As the Human Genome project comes to a close, there is an increasing need for computational tools to mine the immense data sets generated by molecular biologists. We will lead a discussion on algorithms that could be used to search protein and DNA sequence databases for pairs of sequences with similar biological function. The discussion will include a review of statistical models and algorithms developed within the last 10 years, including the popular BLAST algorithm and more recent Gibbs sampling techniques.
